General Information

Taiyuan University of Technology, founded in 1902, is the only "double-first-class" and "211 Project " university in Shanxi. Starting from the major of arts and crafts in Shanxi Institute of Light Industry in 1964, the College of Art has developed into the largest art and design college in Shanxi with 1,674 students, 127 faculty and staff members and a construction area of 30,000 square meters. At present, there are six undergraduate majors in arts and crafts, cultural relic protection technology, digital media art, visual communication design, environmental design and painting.

The master’s degree programs include specialty of design science and Master of Fine Arts (MFA). As a key construction discipline in Shanxi Province, design science ranks among the top 50% in the " 2017 Best Discipline in China ". In the 2019 university rankings authoritatively released by China Science and Education Evaluation Network (Jin Pingguo Ranking), the major of arts and crafts ranks the fourth in China with five stars. The college attaches importance to and encourages students to participate in various professional exhibitions at the national, provincial and ministerial levels. In recent years, students have won more than 360 awards in the National College Student Advertising Competition, NOC and other exhibitions.

In 2013, the Design Art Experimental Center of the college was approved by the Ministry of Education as a national experimental teaching demonstration center. The Art Heritage Research Center is the key research base of humanities and social sciences in colleges and universities in Shanxi Province as well as the Collaborative Innovation Center of Cultural Heritage Protection and Restoration is listed as the construction and cultivation project of innovation base of colleges and universities in Shanxi Province. The college also has provincial-level scientific research and teaching platforms such as Shanxi Art and Design Graduate Education Innovation Center and Shanxi Arts and Crafts R&D Base, and has a professional gallery of 4380 square meters.

Teachers of the college are committed to scientific research and creation. In recent years, they have undertaken more than 120 projects including the National Social Science Fund of China, China National Arts Fund, Humanities and Social Sciences Project of the Ministry of Education, Shanxi Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning Project, etc.. They have participated in national, provincial and ministerial professional exhibitions such as National Fine Arts Exhibition and won more than 380 awards. A large number of high-quality academic monographs, papers and works have been published, and fruitful academic achievements have been obtained. The joint public welfare design project of "Western Loess Cave Reconstruction Design" led by Professor Zhao Hui, Dean, won the only gold medal in design category of the 12th National Fine Arts Exhibition.

Based on the industry and serving the social, economic and cultural construction in the region, the college has signed cooperation agreements on scientific research and practical teaching with China Packaging Federation, Yachang Group, Shanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau and Shanxi Arts and Crafts Association. The college has carried out extensive international cooperation and signed cooperation agreements with famous international universities such as Chicago University, Rome Academy of Fine Arts, Paris Institute of Advanced Art, etc. It has trained 10 French students through the China-Europe Humanities Scholarship Program of the Ministry of Education, and frequently introduced teachers from cooperative universities such as France and Italy to hold workshop training talents, and carried out various cultural and artistic exchange activities, thus significantly improving its internationalization level.
